泡硝子の村、ビオットは街並みもなかなかのもんです。観光客あんまりいませんが、ほんまもんの"南仏"って感じがします。この外壁の土感もたまりません。でも、触ったらボロボロ落ちていきます。個人的に緑の被覆が好きなんで、そんな写真を集めました。
Not only the bubbles inside the glass, but also streets are quite nice in Biot. Not many tourists, I feel like this is the real south French village. I like the texture of the earth wall, but when you touch it, it easily peels off. Individually, I really like the buildings covered by greenery, so I updated those photos below.



レストランのファサードです。タイルじゃなくて普通の石を貼っつけてるから、タイルのような薄っぺらい感じもなく、一個一個の石の形も違う。この粗い手造り感がいいんです。
One Restaurant facade, it's not the wall with tiles which gives me the impression of flimsy wall. Each stone is thick and massive. I could see handmade texture on the wall.


自然に壁を伝って育った植栽。誘導もせずにここまでうまいこと育つもんです。自然と偶然にできたものには個性があって魅力があります。もっとカラフルな花や緑に包まれてる家もあったのですが、このぐらいの控えめな方が良くないですか？
The plant naturally grew up vertically on the wall. People ever didn't lead it's growing, I guess. The thing grew up naturally and coincidentally has unique character and attractive. There were many other colorful houses with flowers, but I prefer this condition of greenery.


ここはレストランです。アーチ状の柱の足元に土と植栽を入れるスペースをつくってます。しばらくすると、右と左の柱を伝う植栽が中央で合体する。レストランを木陰が覆います。手前の柵はないほうがいいですね。
Other restaurant's facade. There's a space to put earth and plants at the foot of arch shaped pillars. The both side of plants grew and met together at the top of the arch, it then make shade of a tree. They should get rid of the iron fence on the photo.


土壁に緑ってほんまにええんです。見た目だけでなく、遮熱効果もあります。しかし、蔦系の根は、壁にひびや隙間があるとどんどん食い込んでいって雨漏れの原因になりますので、防根対策は怠ってはなりません。
Earth wall and greenery, they're a perfect combination. Not only an appearance, but also thermal barrier coating. You have to take a measurement against a water leak, because once cracks appear, the plants root themselves into the crack, which cause water leak.


石畳の工事を見学しました。工事を一生懸命してるありのままの姿を撮りたかったのに、仕事の手を休めてポーズを決めてくれます。
I could observed a construction site of stone pavement, and wanted to take some photos as they usually work, but they stopped working and Posed for a picture.


モルタルを敷き詰めて、その上に石を叩いて敷き詰める。時々、板を置いて叩いて面を合わせる。水平器なんか利用しません。それでいいんでしょうね。
Firstly they put mortar on the ground, secondly laid almost the same size of stone, thirdly struck them with hammer to make it flat. They never use "level" normally we use but It's no problem for them.


しばらくして戻ると、長い昼休みに入っていました。シエスタやな。しかし、綺麗です。この後、石と石の隙間にまたモルタルを塗り込むそうです。
I walked around a little bit, then came back. They were in long break like "siesta". The worker said, finally, they put mortar between the stones. Beautiful, isn't it.
  

南仏のコート・ダジュールに来ました。南仏では街並み、住宅、店舗、植栽、看板ひとつにセンスの高さが感じられます。それを学びたい！ニース、モナコ、カンヌ、マルセイユは南仏有数のリゾート地ですが、興味なし！ 
Côte d'Azur in France.  I'm keen to learn refined tastes of design of towns, houses, shops, landscapes and even an advertisement.  Nice, Monaco, Canne or Marseille, are famous as the French resort cities, but are not in my interest.


僕は素朴な南仏の田舎町が見たい。そして、目的地がビオット。ここはガラス工芸の街です。しかも、ただのガラスやありません。あぶくの入ったガラスです。ずっと、厚みのある、表面がガタガタしててあぶくの入ったガラスを窓やステンドグラスに使用したいと思ってましたが、日本では手に入りません。既製品ではあるけど、手づくり感がなくて好かん。そう思ってた矢先、この街を見つけました。
I want a French countryside.  My destination is Biot, famous as glass with bubbles inside.  I have been looking for the thick, rough texture and bubbles inside the glass for a long time.  I hardly get this kind of glass in Japan.  We have similar factory-made glasses though, it doesn't have hand-made texture, but I found the right place to get it.


あまり観光地化されているような感じではないので、本当の南仏の街並みを見れたような感じがします。しかし、センスがいいんっすよね。１軒２軒センスのある雰囲気の家はあっても、こんなに通りの住人全員がセンスいいってなかなかないですよね。
I think this village is not too much tourist place, feel like I can see the real village of Provance.  I'm highly impressed with the local people with very refined tastes.  Not only one or two, but also the all houses on the street have good tastes.


街にはガラス工房がいくつかあって、工房で製作してるところを見学させてくれます。職人は、見られてるのを意識してか、オーバーアクションで見学者を楽しませてくれます。チラチラこっちを見るのが笑ける。集中して。
There are some glass factories, and you can see their works.  The craftsmen knew we were watching, so they show us their works  as performance.  It was funny they sometimes glanced at us.  Concentrate!


窯の炎や赤く溶けた硝子って見入ってしまいます。製造方法書いてあったけどフランス語で読まれへん。
I grazed at kiln fire and melting glass.  The production method was written on the board, but couldn't read French at all.


色付けはこうやって色粉に溶けたガラスを直接付けてました。
Staining method is putting color powders to melting glass like this.


熱いで、しかし。
Bloody hot!


他にも工房をいくつか回りました。そして遂にあぶくガラスの製造方法を聞き出せたんです。小さいあぶくは溶けたガラスの表面を針でつく。大きなあぶくは溶けたガラスに穴をあけて、そこに水を入れてからふさぐとできるようです。これなら日本の硝子工房に頼めそう。帰ったら造るぞー！
I saw around some other studios.  Finally one lady taught me how to produce the glass with bubble.  It's quite simple, to make small bubbles, make small holes with needles.  To make big one, once make a lager hole and put some water and close it.  I can ask one studio to make it.  They surely can make it. I can make it!
  

ベリンゾーナから南へ電車で数十分。スイスのルガーノに来ました。ルガーノ近辺では近年、モダン建築が多く建てられており、特にマリオ・ボッタ氏の作品が世界的に注目を浴びています。ルガーノから、ほんとはこれを見に行きたかったんですが、行けませんでした。
Took a train from Bellinzona to Lugano for 30 minitues, visited Lugano, Switzerland. Attractive modern architectures were recently built around Lugano, and especially, Mario Botta's works have gained the spotlight from the world. I was passionate to see the above Botta's work, but had no time to visit.


ここは山に囲まれた湖畔の街です。歴史的な建築物も残っているので、それがモダン建築とどう建ち並んでいるのか楽しみにして行きました。ちなみにスイスは２日しか滞在しないので、設計事務所は訪ねません。しっかり見て学びたいと思います。
Lugano is the lake side, and surrounded by mountains. Historical buildings still remain, I'm curious how the moderns are in harmony with the historicals. By the way, I didn't visit any architectural design office in Switzerland, because I stayed only for two days. I saw them, and leant from them.

こんな建築もあり。これもマリオ・ボッタ氏の作品のビル。この名前カナ変換してたらボッタクリの文字が。アテネでぼったくりに会ったのを思い出してしまった。ビル屋上にはちょんまげ的に木が１本。赤レンガの幾何学模様がカッコよかったです。
Other way, modern architectures. This is also designed by Mario Botta. When I type his name into Japanese katakana, then the word " bottakuri" appeared, which means "rip off". This reminds me that I ripped off in Athens. One tree's on the building like Japanese Samurai hair style. The geometric pattern of red bricks are beautiful.


このバス停アーケードも同じくボッタ氏の設計。
Botta designed this roof of bus station.


これも、ベリンゾーナに戻ってしまいますがボッタ氏の設計。ビジネスセンタービルです。かれはこルガーノ出身の建築家で、今では世界的な建築家となっています。
Going back to Bellinzona, the Business Centr Building, designed by Botta. He is from Lugano, and is a world famous architect now.


このようにそんな変な感じもなく、歴史的建築物とモダン建築が建ち並んでいます。モダン建築がシンプルですっきりしているので、歴史的な建築と喧嘩しないんでしょうね。
I could see the harmony between the historicals and moderns. Those modern designs are quite simple that's why it suites to the historical. They never against each I other.


ちなみに現地で集合住宅の基礎工事を見学しました。日本の工事現場とそう変わりませんが、上半身裸で仕事しているのと、ニッコリ挨拶してくれるところは違いますね。
I observed a construction site of concrete basement. Not so different from Japanese, but only the difference is being naked, or they're sociable.

スイスの街はかなり魅力的なでしたが、次の楽しみに取っておきたいと思います。南フランスへ移動します。
Switzerland must be an attractive place but will keep as the next pleasure of my trip. Heading to the south France.
  

フランス人のルームメイトの女の子に日本人男性のイメージを聞きました。つり目、痩せてる、背が低い。ひどい。俺が目の前におるのにそこまで言う？
I asked about the image of Japanese boys to French roommates. Squint-eyed, skinny and short. Shocking! They forgot about I was in front of them.


少し地中海から離れて、山岳建築を見にスイスまで足を伸ばしました。近代建築も見られるとのことで、ベリンゾーナという街に来ました。イタリアの国境からそう離れていませんので、ほとんどの人がイタリア語喋ってます。とても清潔感のある綺麗な街です。
Flew from Malta to Milan, apart from the Mediterranean for a while, to see mountaneous architecture to Switzerland. Bellinzona is for seeing mountainous and modern architecture. Bellinzona is in south of Switzerland near the border line of Italy. People mostly speak Italian. Clean and beautiful city.


街のインフォメーションのある建物の中庭。梁上に植栽のあるのが洒落てます。あるのとないのと大違い。
The court yard of the information centre. There are flowers above the beams. So much different between exit and not exist of the flowers.


ここには３つの積石造のお城があり、街のシンボルとなっています。13〜15世紀にかけて建てられたもので、そのひとつがカステルグランデ城です。黒みを帯びた石で全体が構成され、重々しくて堅固そうな城です。
There are three castles built in 13 -15 centry, which are the symbols of the city. One of them is called Castle Grande. Whole buildings are structured by black stones that makes the castle solid and strong.


今回も山の上の３つの城のひとつがありましたので、ハムストリングのトレーニングとして駆け上がりました。
One of the castle is on the top of the hill, so as a training for my humstrings, I ran up to the top.


山の中腹にあるのが２つめの城のモンテベッロ城です。カステルグランデ城とは城壁でつながっています。
On the side the hill, there's a second castle called Castello Montebello, connecting to Castle Grande with ramparts.


夜には３つの城がライトアップされてめちゃ綺麗です。
Those three castles are fabulous at night with lightings.


山頂からの景色は気持ちいいっす。山の湧き水かなりうまかったです。僕、胃腸弱いけど硬水は大丈夫なようです。
I felt so good on the top, enjoyed the scenery, and springwater was so nice. I have weak stomach though, the hard warter seems no problem for me. I enjoyed the difference between Switzerland and other cities I visited so far.



  

建築家のイングランド教授の設計されたセント・ジョーンズ・キャバリエというバレッタにある劇場・ギャラリー施設の見学に行きました。このアーチ状のアプローチ階段はとても魅力的でした。
I visited the St. Jones Cavalier designed by Prof. England. The arch approach and stairs are plenty attractive with the lights.


あらゆる幾何学模様が整然とデザインの中に組み込まれ、いるだけですっきりして気持ちのいい空間がありました。劇場、ギャラリーとも幾何学デザインが特徴でとても勉強になりました。
Various kinds of geometrical pattern are systematically designed in his work. It makes me feel comfortable when I stayed in the space. I could learn a lot.


翌日、コゾという街にバス、フェリーと乗り継いで移動。船の向こうに教会などの歴史的建築物と海に浮かぶヨットが対照的な街が見えてきました。この乾いた感じが今までのヨーロッパ建築とは異なっています。北アフリカに近いだけあって、そっち寄りなんでしょうか。
Visited Cozo by bus and ferry next day, came in contrastive view of traditional buildings and sailboats. I felt dryness in the cities of Malta, which are different from European cities I visited so far. I guess it’s because this country’s close to the North Africa.


海がとても青い。日本と違って、雲ひとつないことや、島に緑がないので反射光の関係や、成分的な違いなどが理由なんでしょうか。ほんまに青い。これが地中海ブルーやな。この紫の花なんですか？深見さん。
The sea is so blue. The reasons could be no clouds or no green reflection from the land’s surface or constituent of water, whatever it’s so blue. This must be the Mediterranean blue. This plant’s purple is also great.


泳いだら観光になってしまうので、決して泳いでません。このほんまもんの青色を目に焼き付けて帰りました。本物の美しさを見て感性が刺激を受けるんです。そう信じて。泳ぐとまた某先輩からクレームがくるんで…　
If I swim here, my travel could be just sightseeing, and my senior will make a complain to me. I never swim. This real blue color was burned into my brain and gave me an inspiration to my sensibility. I believe.

めっちゃ飛び込みたかったー！ちなみに今回、マルタのセント・ジュリアンで宿泊したホステルのオーナーは、ラグビーの元マルタ代表のキャプテンでとてもよくしてくれました。また、会うことを約束して、マルタを後にします。次はスイスの山岳建築です。ちょっと地中海から離れます。
To be honest, I really wanted to jump into that blue! By the way, the owner of my hostel is former captain of Malta national team, he did very good to me. We promised to meet again, I then left Malta, off to Switzerland. Apart from the Mediterranean for a while. Mountainous architecture next!

  

マルタで２度目の面接。面接とは言っても、有名な建築家にダメもとで会ってもらうようお願いしたら、あっさりOKしてくれたのでビックリ。めっちゃ緊張しました。求人はされてなかったものの、話をしたいと言ってくれたんです。リチャード・イングランド教授のご自宅を訪問しました。マルタの建築家で、マルタ大学、国際建築アカデミー、ブエノス・アイレス大学でも教鞭を執られています。
The second interview in Malta. I asked one famous architect to see me. There was no guarantees that he would say yes, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. However, he easily answered me yes, so I was really nervous. No job opportunity, but he said he wanted to talk. He is an architect, professor of Malta Univ., International Academy of Architecture and BuenoS Aires Univ. I visited his place.


The Garden というイングランド教授のご自宅にあるお庭です。京都のお寺の額庭のように、植栽の影によってお庭風景が絵のように切り取られています。
I could look around one of his work, "The Garden" beside his house. This is one picture, shadow of plants becomes a frame like traditional gardens in Kyoto.


イングランド教授です。色々な話を聞かせて頂きました。特に、伝統に習う、伝統を残すということの重要性を感じておられ、日本の伝統建築デザインを継承したいという自分の想いに賛同してもらえました。本当に何で俺みたいなんに会ってくれたんだろうかと不思議に思います。
Prof. England, We had lots of conversation, especially, he attach importance to respect and retain traditions. He agreed with my passion to take over the traditional Japanese architecture. I still don't understand why he met a guy like me.


彼はアーティストでもあり、自宅オフィスで作品を拝見することができました。今、建築家でもここまで描ける人はなかなかいません。画家の域です。なぜなら、彼は６歳の頃からずっと描き続けているからです。建築士として、スケッチをおろそかにしてはいけないと指導を受けました。CADなどのコンピューターに頼ってはいけない。なぜなら、手で描くことは、脳、すなわち感性に直結しているからです。
He's also an artist. I could see his drawins at his office. Few architect could have such a great drawing skills nowadays. He attains expert level of artist, because he's started drawing since he was 6. He said, not to rely on CAD or computer, as an architect, you should keep drawing, because hand drawing connects directly to your brain and sensibility.


彼の建築作品集と画集をプレゼントしてくれました。何かあればいつでもメールしてくれと言ってくれました。遠いマルタに、僕にとって素晴らしいメンターができました。
I got the gift, his collection book of his works and drawings. He said I can contact him at any time, in Malta, all the way from Japan, I have a great mentor.
  

マルタの街も基本的に積石造ですが、その原料はクリーム色の石灰石。マルダでは建築の原料がそれしか採れないので、この街並みもなるべくしてなったということです。街全体がクリーム色で乾燥地帯の街のような雰囲気がします。
Buildings in Maita are basically masonry structure, made of cream colored lime stones. The lime stones has been only a material for buildings here, so that the city is mostly cream colored, looks like a dry land city.


セント・ジュリアンという繁華街で、そのリゾート開発のほとんどに携わっている建築事務所で面接をしてもらえることになりました。
I finally had an interview at one architectural design office who dealt with the most of the development in the resort area, St. Jillians.


左が建築家のレイ・デミコリ氏で、右がスティーブ・デミコリ氏。親子で建築家です。結局、今は空きがないのと、どこでも現状は就労ビザの発行が難しいだろうとのことでした。しかし、しっかり建築についての情報交換をさせてもらいました。スティーブさんとはfacebook仲間に。積石造のことは彼に聞きます。
Unfortunately, no vacancy for a job and he said it's hard to get a work permission anywhere in Europe right now. However, I could learnt a lot in our conversation, and had information exchange on architecture. The left is the architect, Mr. Ray DeMicoli and the right is Mr.Steve DeMicoli. Steve becomes my facebook friend, he would be my mentor of the masonry architecture.


気を取り直して、夜は地元のラグビーチームの練習に参加。チームのメンバーは色んな国の人が入り混じり、快く練習に加えてもらえました。しかし、ウォームアップでいきなりのフルコンタクトにびっくり！キツかったけどめちゃくちゃ楽しかった。
Rally my spirits, I joined a rugby training with the local team. This team is a melting pot, and I really enjoy the training. I was surprised that their warming up is full contact. It was tough, but so much fun!


チームキャプテンのクリス。めっちゃええ人です。フッカーかと思ったら、トリッキーなスタンドオフでした。ラグビーは世界共通。僕にとっては、これが一番幸せな瞬間なんかもしれません。
With their team captain, Chris, I thought he was hooker or prop, but actually tricky first five. Rugby is a international sport. To play rugby with the people all over the world, this could be the happiest moment for me.

明日も面接頑張ります。
